Best money Hacks Every Young Person Must Know and Practice

Written by Ernest EmekaPublished on August 6th, 2021

When it comes to money, an insignificant shift in spending, saving, or thinking about money can have a major impact on your life.  Unfortunately, most people do not have deep insight into personal finance until they make mistakes.  Many young people are clueless because they lack basic financial education.  While not every one of us may be opportune to walk through the doors of an MBA class, there are money hacks that can help us save money.

Wondering how to make ends meet, we have made it easier for you to grow your investments and savings without difficulty.

Learn Self-Control

Some people grew up in families that took financial literacy seriously.  This set of persons has the advantage of becoming financially stable than those who have no basic knowledge of what to do with their money. However, self-control is at the center of any financial independence.

Do you buy things on impulse or in debt? You should learn how to control what you spend your money on monthly.

Control Your Financial Future

People who have difficulty managing their resources, often end up wasting them.  You do not have to depend on everyone for your financial steps. Some people are unscrupulous and can "help" you risk everything. In Africa, we have little business when it comes to using a credit card, but our debit cards can be emptied if we have no control over what we do with our money. We have numerous financial books that can help you make the right choice when it comes to money. Most of the advice you need is online and free to read.

Know Where Your Money Goes

Do you spend money without placing a reason for it? You should know where your money goes and realize the importance of spending rightly.  You begin by budgeting monthly. When you consider the amount you spend on irrelevant things or things you could do without, it helps you save money.  In your daily expenses, consider things that you do not have to spend more on, and deal with the most important things.  When you keep your monthly recurring expenses low, you can save more over time.

Start an Emergency Fund

Many young Africans do not have an emergency fund. We know that paying yourself first is a popular mantra in the financial world. You must know that no matter how challenging things might be for you, and the number of things you must solve with money, keep an emergency fund monthly. This could save you when you are in a financial crisis.

Start Saving for Retirement

Most people erroneously believed that saving for retirement is for parents or older people.  You should plan how to save for your retirement in advance.  It could save you loads of problems in the future. In Africa, the retirement scheme is often not popular when it comes to young people working independently.

Compound interest would work best for you if you start saving early enough. You must not save a huge chunk of your money towards this goal. Make up your mind the amount you will save monthly. This is a sure route to financial retirement.

Get a Grip on Taxes

Whether you like it or not, you pay tax directly or indirectly in Africa.  When you buy some items, you buy for VAT. However, when you start working in an established firm, you have no power over when to pay for your tax. Learn to calculate your financial strength after meeting your tax obligation.  You should know the type of tax you are paying in your place of work.   You should know this before you receive your first paycheck. We have some online calculators that can do the arithmetic for you.

Guard Your Health

Health is wealth! If you do not have health insurance, how will you settle yourself when you end up in an emergency room? Some medical procedures could be very expensive and financially draining. Something that most Africans would not touch is health insurance.  Africa is a highly religious place and has a low insurance education.  Many young people are uninsured, especially those who work in private sectors or alone.

You can guard your health to reduce the number of life emergencies you can encounter. Drink water, eat healthy and wholesome fruits and vegetables, avoid excessive consumption of alcohol, exercise, maintain a healthy weight, and live responsibly.

Use Apps to Save More and Spend Less

We have different things we do with our cell phones. Saving and spending money is one of those purposes. We have numerous apps that make it simpler in saving or spending more both in-person and online: Some of the apps earn more money for the user when they are used for business.  With apps, you can learn how to control what you sell or buy. You can make use of your bank's app in saving money and spending less monthly.

Switch to a Cash-Only Budget

While using apps to save more, it could be your downfall if you have no control over what you use in buying or spending.  You can opt for a cash-only budget. This money hack ensures that you make use of cash in paying for what you want to use. You are aware of what you do with your money. The hack serves as a buffer if you want to overspend on things that do not matter much to you. Many people leave their debit cards behind and move out with cash.  Once, you have spent all the money you left home, you can end your shopping without running into debt.

Improve Your Energy Efficiency

When you pay more in utility, you lose more. While we have no money hack that can help pay less, you can do the following:

You should install low-flow showerheads and faucets.

You need to unplug electronics when not in use.

Take advantage of the energy-saving appliances.

Plan Your Meals

Eating fast foods or restaurants always have an impact on your financial strength.  The more you spend on meals outside, the more money you risk saving.  Meals cooked away from home often cost more than what we could prepare. You should make a plan on what you want to prepare weekly. This allows you to eat healthier and save money.

What you cook at home is often more nutritious than what you consume when you order takeout. Find ways to eat better at home.   Food is one of the greatest budget busters for everyone. When you plan your meals, you hardly get tempted to eat out.

Buy Used

While buying new items could be exciting and cool, it is not everything that we can buy new.  To save money, you can begin by buying fairy-used items.  The fairy used items may not work on most products. However, while you can use fairy used items in place of a new item could be a money hack for you.

We have different places where you can get used items online. From the Facebook marketplace to eBay, you can reduce the amount you spend on items.

Order your groceries online.

Impulse shopping can be nailed to the cross when you order your groceries online.  When you order online, you know what you spent. Many people who visit groceries end up leaving things they do not need and regret why they bought such items. Online groceries can help you save money without impulsive buys.

Always Bring a List When You go to the Store.

To help you avoid impulsive buys, you should bring a list whenever you visit a store. This helps you stay within your budget. If you do not have a list of what to buy, many distractions may force you to get things you do not need. Many of us are guilty of walking into a grocery store and pick things we never had in mind.

Keep your Savings Account Separate

No matter how self-discipline you are, you might be tempted to spend more when you do not have a separate account for your savings.  People who struggle with saving should not have one account for both saving and spending. A simple money hack is to have a separate account for your monthly expenses and your savings.

Remove your Debit Card Information from Online Store Websites

Things have become easier for us when it comes to shopping online. Many young people leave their debit card information on numerous stores and websites.  This allows them to shop without difficulty.  Remove your debit card information from any online store to save you from spending above your budget.

Pay debt FIRST

Do not allow your debt to linger for a long time. You should pay off your debt first and learn to live within your means. Many young people try to fit into a society that appreciates flashy lifestyles and shortcuts. Often, this lead may many people to borrow more than they can pay back.  When you pay off your debt first, it helps you reach your financial goals faster.

Write a Mini-budget as a Money Hack

Things do not always work the way we planned.  You do not have to be rigid when it comes to adjusting your budget.  Sometimes, we are tempted to do away with our initial budget because of a change in plan. You do not have to thrash your budget when this happens.  Instead, make a mini-budget to cushion your major budget. A mini-budget can help you stay afloat until you bounce back financially.  Life is never short of surprises. You can have medical emergencies or other life emergencies that require that you change everything you planned to do. When this happens, learn to create a smaller budget to settle other needs.

Allow Items Relax in Your Cart For Some Days Before Buying

You should allow your items to rest in your cart for some time. This helps you decide if you want to buy these items.  Chances are that you may find reasons why you should stay away from such a purchase.  The next time you are tempted to buy things online, push them to your cart, and allow them to rest for at least three days.   If you are using the malls or stores, you should not grab a shopping cart when you walk into any of them. You can carry the things you need until you get uncomfortable. This can help you get only the things you require.

Limit Subscriptions

Many companies are making use of subscription models for their customers. Many of us do not realize the number of subscriptions, we signed up for within a short time. The bank statement tells us the gravity of the amount we may have spent. You should limit subscriptions if you want to save more for yourself.

Negotiate When You Pay with Cash

When you want to pay for a large purchase with cash, you should negotiate for discounts.  Whether you are buying appliances, furniture, or getting your car fixed, find ways to get discounts.  It does not hurt when you request this business offer.

You can negotiate your medical bills! Yes, many people are not aware that they can negotiate their medical bills.  This overlooked budget can work in your favour if you get it.

Give Yourself a Monthly Allowance

Do not consider allowances for kids only.  You can deal with overspending if you give yourself a monthly allowance.  When you use this money hack, it can give you control over what you spend and allow you to save more.
