Meet Isaiah Obinna Philip, a Nigerian contemporary portraitist and painter with a lifelong passion for art, who dared to dream big. From facing a $51,416 funding gap to securing a full Graduate Teaching Assistantship, Philip’s study abroad journey wasn’t without its challenges. But with Pay4Me by his side for payments and visa prep, his path to Wayne State University became smoother, faster, and stress-free.
Hello Philip,
Can you walk us through your journey with Pay4Me?
Pay4Me really came through for me. I discovered them through a group I'm part of, researched a bit, and found their easy-to-use app. Despite a slight delay, their supportive customer service kept me in the loop. With numerous positive reviews, I trusted them, and they delivered as promised. Pay4Me made payments straightforward and hassle-free.
What was your experience like using Pay4Me’s mock visa interview service?
My experience with Pay4Me's mock visa interview service was fantastic. The mock sessions were thorough, and their support helped me articulate my goals, easing my nerves for the actual interview. Their guidance from Mr. Ernest made the process smooth and stress-free, and I'd highly recommend them to anyone preparing for a visa interview.
Many students worry about visa rejection. What helped you stay composed?
Many students fear visa rejection and feel overwhelmed during interviews. What kept me composed was focusing on my unique story and avoiding the noise from countless groups. I knew my path was distinct, so I kept my support circle small and focused, avoiding contradictory advice. I stayed positive, prepared, and trusted in a different outcome for me. Again, avoid joining too many groups and having too many mentors or doing too many mock interviews, you might meet someone who might shatter your self-confidence.
Why did you choose to pursue a Master’s in Fine Arts with a concentration in gallery management?
Art has always been my passion, a lifelong love. Pursuing a Master's in Fine Arts, focusing on gallery management, aligns with my goal to support Nigerian artists. They're talented but often lack representation. I want to bridge the gap between artists and galleries, ensuring fair treatment and showcasing the richness of Nigerian art. My ultimate dream is to open my own gallery and elevate these artists globally.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced on your study abroad journey?
One of my biggest challenges was funding. Initially, my department didn't have funding available for me, and I was staring at a $51,416 deficit with no clear solution. I was even considering loans with Mpower. But about a month before my interview, God came through for me. And a graduate teaching assistant job came through, providing me with 100% funding. It was a turning point, and I knew my journey had truly begun.
As someone transitioning from statistics to fine arts, how did you explain this during your visa interview?
When asked about the shift from statistics to fine arts, I emphasized my passion for art. I explained that it wasn't a sudden decision but a long-standing love, evident through my extensive work displayed on social media. I advised that, regardless of the field switch, demonstrating experience and confidence in your chosen path is key to being confident. Convince them you're sure about the path you've chosen and why you're pursuing it with determination.
How do you plan to use your degree to transform the gallery and visual arts space in Nigeria?
I aim to leverage my degree from Wayne State University to revolutionize Nigeria's art scene. With experience gained under the mentorship of the distinguished Professor Thomas, who has curated over 200 exhibitions globally, I'll return to launch a gallery that not only showcases but also fiercely advocates for underrepresented artists. My goal is to propel their work onto the global stage, leveraging the valuable connections I've built to connect their creations with collectors worldwide.
What advice would you give to young creatives in Nigeria who want to study fine arts abroad?
To young Nigerian creatives aiming to study fine arts abroad have a burning passion and trust the journey. It's a tough field, so take it step by step, believing in your ability. Choose reputable institutions with a strong fine arts background, not start-ups. Look for schools that value your unique artistic voice and aim to refine, not change, your work. Stay true to your worth and don't underprice your art.
How did you build your study abroad dream?
I dedicated a year to preparing, aligning my work with the school's expectations. Applying early and showcasing a clear interest in funding were key. I emphasized my willingness to contribute as a graduate teaching assistant. Consistent follow-ups and a strategic approach made a significant difference.
What stood out to you about that moment during your interview?
I felt joy and validation when the visa officer smiled during my interview. After preparing diligently, I felt deserving of my success. The officer's immediate approval felt like a nod to my hard work and, I believe, a touch of divine grace. Although I was only asked one question about my switch to statistics, I felt ready and confident. My preparation, demeanor, and faith played crucial roles in my success.
What would you say to students trying to make payments abroad?
If you're facing challenges with paying fees like your service or visa fees, try the Pay4Me app. It's a great solution that makes things easier. With Pay4Me, you won't need to find someone in the U.S. to handle it for you. It's the right tool for the job.
What final tips would you share with international students preparing for U.S. visa interviews?
I'd say my visa interview was unique because I didn't walk in with set expectations. Instead of relying on others' experiences, I focused on my own story, knowing it could be different. Expect the unexpected, and go in with confidence in your path. For Nigerian students heading to the U.S., treat it like any other interview—don't be scared, just own your narrative.
