Study in Malta: A Guide for International Students

Malta is hidden in the heart of the Mediterranean. It is a small archipelago filled with fossil-studded cliffs, ancient buildings of Valletta, prehistoric temples, and compelling natural beauty. Renowned for its world-class education system and rich history, Malta has become one of the destinations for international students to study. 

Intake Deadlines:

Some Maltese universities don’t have application deadlines.

  • Summer (June-July)

  • Winter (January-February)

English Test

Maltese universities require English proficiency tests from international students, and some of these tests include:

  • IELTS

  • TOEFL

  • PTE Academic

  • C1 Advanced

What is required for international students to study in Malta?

Students should contact their university or check its official website for the specified admission criteria and documents.

 Here is a list of documents required to study in Malta:

Undergraduate Programmes

  • High school leaving certificate

  • Higher Secondary mark sheet and transcripts

  • One year of completed university education (any diploma or certificate program)

  • Proof of English proficiency test scores 

  • SOP and LORs.

Postgraduate Programmes

  • Bachelor’s degree transcript

  • Proof of English proficiency test scores 

  • SOP and LORs

Admission Process

Before International students can receive their invitation letters, they must have the following documents:

  1. Completed application form

  2. Medical certification 

  3. AIDS test certificate issued 

  4. A copy of the birth announcement 

  5. International passport

  6. Academic transcripts

  7. English language proficiency

  8. Curriculum Vitae (CV) / Resume

  9. Letter(s) of Recommendation

  10. Valid health insurance

  11. Financial documents

  12. Visa requirements

  13. Passport-size photographs

  14. Additional program-specific documents

  15. Letter of acceptance from the university

All documents must have a notarized English translation.

Students should present their invitation letters to the Malta Embassy to obtain their visas.

Malta Visa Requirement

  1. Fully completed and signed application form. 

  2. Valid passport with at least two blank pages.

  3. Two passport-size photos with colour and a bright background. 

  4. Letter of acceptance from the university. 

  5. Proof of financial requirements. The requirement for international students is 75% of the minimum wage in Malta. In 2022, the minimum monthly salary in Malta was €792.3, which means that as an international student, you should have at least €594/month.

  6. Health insurance must cover at least €30,000.

  7. Language test. Document proof that you have passed the language test for Malta

Can I come with my dependents?

Yes, if you obtain a residence permit in Malta, your spouse and minor children can join you. 

Work and study in Malta

International students can work up to 20 hours per week. They can apply for an employment license only after obtaining a study visa. While working, they must attend your classes for at least 15 hours per week.
